Use of Service Ranks By Retired Defense Personnel

1-                  Too many time questions are being asked on use of  defence service ranks and its correct use of nomenclature for Officers and other than officer’s ranks. Award of Honorary ranks qualify in 02 types :-
a)      Hon Commissioned Ranks
b)      Hon Ranks  normally given to NCOs on retirement translating into nil monitory benefits
Please find 03 authority letters as below appended to illustrate the subject  and on its correct usage.
a)    GOI Letter  F.28 (1/02/D (Coord)  27th Jul 1983    click the link to read or download
b)    Air force Order  10/2014    dated  23rd May 2014     Click the link to read or download
c)   IHQ Army Ltr 05374-SW-SD-1A Dt 21 Jul 2014

I am sure there may be more letters issued from time to time and readers may share the same for further updating of this blog or incorporation of correctness if any.

2-                  Therefore my understanding of the subject is as below :
Actual Rank (Hon Rank) Name  , Decorations  (Retd)       is the correct sequence
a)      Officers :-
Brig AC Adams , VrC , VSM  (Retd)
Brig (Hon Maj Gen) AC Adams , VrC , VSM  (Retd)

b)      JCOs   are  to be addressed as    Shri
Sub Maj (Hon Lt) MM Singh , VrC (Retd)
MCPO1 (Hon SLt) MM Singh , VSM (Retd)
c)       NCOs
Hon Naib Subedar MM Singh , VrC (Retd)       note here no mention /use of the actual rank held when retired / retiring.
